July 4 Independence Day Mixer 10:00 am-12:00 noon
July 5 Wimbledon Strawberries and Cream Round Robin 1:00 pm-4:00 pm
July 10-12 Adult Camp Weekend
July 15 Rally for the Cure
July 20-24 Junior Tennis Camp – Second Session 1:00 pm-4:00 pm
July 31 Ladies’ Member-Member Tournament

All tennis clinics begin at 9am now instead of 10am.

Tennis tip: When serving the ball, imagine you are in the grocery store and what you want is on the top shelf. You have to reach up for it. It is the same in tennis – it is best to reach up when you make contact with the ball when serving.

Lastly, I want to thank Brittany Sanges and Matt Ellenbogen for returning and welcome Hanna Herlocker to the ONSC tennis courts for the summer. Your help is greatly appreciated by all.

June

The warm weather is here and we have many activities scheduled for this summer. We are now having weekly Round Robins on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The turnout has been good. I am expecting that it will grow as word gets around about all of the fun that we are having. These are no frills, no food, no fee tennis events.

The Memorial Day Tennis Mixer will be Monday, May 25th @ 10:00 a.m. This will include refreshments and a small charge.

The first installment of the Junior Tennis Camp will be June 22-25.

The Ladies’ Spring Triad Interclub Season has concluded and I want to congratulate the ladies on another winning season. I thank all of the ladies who participated, namely, Martha Smith, Denise Cranford, Susan Farrell, Geri McComb, Brenda Varner, Bede Karr, Karen Shelor, Kristine Hutton, Barbara Lindley, Connie Lentz, and Carroll Sitton.

May

Spring is here and is the perfect time to try out a new racquet. We recently received a shipment of Wilson racquets. Don't forget to sign up for our Memorial Day Mixer on Monday, May 25th at 10am.

If you are interested in testing a new racquet, several demo models are available. The Pro Shop is now stocked with a new shipment of Tail women’s tennis apparel. Ladies, it is a great time to add some new items to your tennis wardrobe. Don’t forget - all tennis apparel is 20% off. The previous-season Fila tennis clothes are buy one item at 20% off and get 50% off of your second item.

The Ladies Spring Interclub Tennis Season is in full swing. We play our matches on Tuesday’s at 9:30 a.m. The competition if challenging and the atmosphere is congenial. If you want to play a match for the ONSC, please contact me.

April

The courts have been resurfaced and all six are playable now just in time for the extra hour of daylight we will gain on that date.

The Ladies’ Spring Interclub Season begins March 24th and continues for eight weeks. All matches are played on Tuesday's at 9:30 a.m. There will be a new element this year as far as keeping track of overall records with match scores and having a one week playoff at the end of the season to determine overall league ranking. I think that this will be a nice addition to the competitive/fun atmosphere of the league. Please see me if you are interested in playing with us this season.

Remember, as the temperatures rise, so does the interest in tennis. Please call the Tennis Shop or e-mail me at onscpro@hotmail.com in advance to reserve your tennis court.

March

Let’s hope that the pesky rodent from Pennsylvania was wrong and that spring is just around the corner. As the spring tennis season approaches it might be time to think about getting your tennis racquet restrung. The common rule of thumb is to restring as often per year as you play per week. Restringing your racquet restores its power. The new string provides better elasticity, which translates into more power and better control. If you have any questions about this please call or stop by the Pro Shop to see me.

Ladies, I have spoken with other clubs about making our Interclub matches more competitive and more fun. It looks like some clubs from the Greensboro area will be joining our league. I will let your know more of the details as they materialize.

I hope to see you on the courts soon.

Hilton Head Island, SC --Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) held its International Tennis Symposium & $25,000 Championships, February 16-22, 2008. The annual event will be held at PTR Headquarters on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The Symposium attracts nearly 1,000 tennis teachers and coaches from more than 50 countries. Many of the tennis industry’s most notable speakers including Pat Etcheberry, Chuck Kriese, Dr. Jim Loehr, Dave Miley and Anne Smith will conduct classroom and on court presentations. Subject matter ranges from tennis business to tactics to injury prevention and treatments. There is also a special high school coaches’ tract held over President’s Weekend.

Teaching pros show off their playing skills during the $25,000 Championships, held in conjunction with the Symposium. Also companies including DecoTurf, Gamma, Head/Penn and Playmate are among the 45 tennis organizations and manufactures that will exhibit their new product lines, latest technologies and services at the Tennis Trade Show. Product demonstrations will be conducted on an adjacent demo court.

The Tennis Committee is currently compiling a Tennis Handbook that will be distributed to members. It will include all of the information needed for those interested in the tennis programs being offered. Also included will be a calendar of events for the upcoming season and a list of current and past players with their contact information. Concerning recent tennis play, as long as the temperature stays above freezing the courts have held up well. If you are in doubt as to the playability of the courts, please call the pro shop.

Tip of the Month:

Playing tennis with a racquet that is either too heavy or has the improper grip size often leads to tennis elbow. Ask your pro about rackets that may alleviate injuries as well as improve your play.
