Golf Staff Notes

BULLDOG’S CORNER, volume 9

“How to deal with lies”

After last month’s article regarding special shots, I wanted to go further in depth with one topic I feel could help many of you out: Uneven lies. But before I go any further, I want to stress one key thought regarding uneven lies, BALANCE! Balance is a must on the setup and backswing of these awkward shots. If you can manage to make an easy swing and maintain your balance, you will see your shots landing next to the flag your next time out on the course.

BALL ABOVE FEET (Ball will curve left)
Because the ball is above your feet, it is important to note that your swing will be more around your body, similar to swinging a baseball bat.
• Move your hands down on the grip to shorten the club. You want to compensate for the fact that the ball is closer to you than it would be from a level lie.
• Take a club less than the distance you normally would hit.
• Align yourself right of your target since the flatter swing plane causes a closing clubface which results in a pull or hooked shot.
• Play the ball further back in your stance to offset the tendency to hit the ground first.

BALL BELOW FEET (Ball will curve right)
This tends to be a challenging shot for most players because of the difficulty maintaining address posture, resulting in a low slice or topped shot.
• Bend slightly more than usual when addressing the ball, flexing the knees and tilting more from the hips.
• Make sure your weight doesn’t get out on your toes.
• Aim fairly far to the left, allowing for a loss of distance…take plenty of club.
• Swing normally and within yourself, concentrating on good balance.
• The swing plane on this shot will tend to be more upright.

UPHILL LIES (Ball will go higher, shorter, and curve left)
The main challenge here is to remember that because the ground is angling upward, more loft will be added to the club causing the ball to fly shorter than a regular swing would produce.
• Your right shoulder will be a bit lower than normal at address to match the slope..
• Your weight will be influenced slightly more to the right because of the slope
• Move assertively through the ball so that you don’t fall back and pull the ball left.
• Play the ball at your normal ball position or slightly forward.
• There is a bit more tendency to draw this shot so aiming a little to the right of your target is desirable.

DOWNHILL LIES (Ball will go lower, further, and curve right)
This is a difficult lie for many golfers, simply because the tendancy to top the ball.
• Your left shoulder will be a bit lower than normal at address to match the slope.
• Your weight will be influenced slightly more to the left because of the slope.
• Move the ball back in your stance---the steeper the lie, the further you move it back.
• Align yourself to the left to allow for a slight fade.
• Depending on the severity of the slope, select one ore two clubs shorter than normal since the ball will shoot off the downhill lie with a lower and hotter trajectory.
• Make a “compact” feeling swing with less assertive weight shift and lower body turn.
• Swing down along the slope and within yourself.

By understanding these setup tips, you can be more prepared to tackle the course. Contact me with any questions!

See you on the range!

Bulldog's Corner, Volume 8

The following six topics I believe can truly change your game altogether. I hope you all had an opportunity to put into practice the second two topics I covered last time. However, before I go any further, I will briefly review all six for you:

1.Swing Technique
2. Practice
3. Physical Conditioning
4. Mental Strength
5. Special Knowledge
6. Equipment Technique

The two topics that will be covered this week are: Special Knowledge and Equipment Technique.

Special Knowledge:

If you have watched any golf over the last several months, I am sure you have noticed how some of the older players on the PGA Tour have managed to play and still compete at a high level. Take Kenny Perry, for example. He is 48 years old, and still managing to win and/or finish top-10 in several recent PGA tournaments. How can that be? It is the "special knowledge" that has been learned from experience. As a person ages they can compensate for the physical loss by learning what we could call "Technical tricks" that can make you a smarter golfer. But if youth can learn these "tricks" earlier, then watch out! Here are some examples:

Tight lies - When you find your ball resting in a divot or on hardpan, you can still produce a good shot by compensating for it in your setup. All you have to do is move your sternum three to six inches toward the target. By moving your sternum and the club shaft forward, it will guarantee you will hit the ball first. Expect the ball to fly at a lower trajectory with more roll because you are taking loft off of the club.

Uneven lies - Knowing how to compensate and adjust for uneven lies is very important. You don't always get a flat lie like you do on the driving range! Here are some pointers on the general direction the ball will go on these uneven lies:

Uphill - The ball will curve more left

Downhill - Ball will curve right

Ball above feet - Ball will curve left

Ball below feet - Ball will curve right

Altering the scene - If you are faced with a 50-yard shot over the bunker to a tight pin, rather than tightening up and getting nervous, try this instead: Turn either left or right so that the bunker is no longer in your line. Pick a spot ahead in the grass that is equal distance to where the flag is on the green. Make some practice greens imagining you are going to this spot. It's just a straightforward shot, no bunker, no trouble, no problems! Now turn to your real target on the green and do exactly what you felt when the bunker wasn't there. You'll be more relaxed and the shot will come easier.

Equipment Technique

It still amazes me during my lessons how many people don't have clubs that are fitted for them. I've even heard during these lessons people say they are making a swing to fit their clubs, rather than the clubs fitting their swing. If you haven't had a club fitting, I encourage you to make sure your clubs are designed to work for you. As an example, if your "lie angle" (the angle between the center of the shaft and the sole) is 2 degrees off, your shots will go 20 feet off-line. Therefore, it is impossible to hit a straight shot with a square clubface with the wrong lie angle. This is a simple test that I can check in 5 minutes. So whatcha waiting for? Stop by the shop to have yours checked out!

Happy Golfing!

Golf Course Ratings for 2008

States Best - The ONSC again was voted the best private and 2nd best overall (behind Pinehurst #2) golf course in the state by the panelist of the North Carolina Magazine. This rating of the 2 best courses has been the same for as long as the rankings have been in existence, but we continue to close the gap! Thank you to the panelists who think like we do and congratulations to us!
