September
I am happy and proud to report that John Chatlak, Tennis Director was
selected to represent the United States in two international tennis tournaments
last month. These events hosted some of the best tennis players in the world in
their respective age divisions.
The President’s Cup tournament was held August 20th – 22nd at the Philadelphia
Cricket Club. This bi-annual tournament between the United States and France
included players who have either won previous national titles or have
represented their country in international competition in the past.
The Diamond Jubilee tournament was held August 24th – 29th at the historic Chevy
Chase Club (founded in 1747) in Washington D.C. In addition to the United
States, the following countries competed in this event: Argentina, Australia,
Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain,
Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Russia, South Africa,
Sweden, and Switzerland.
This was quite an honor and privilege for John to participate in these events
and I know he was appreciative of the members that traveled to support him. A
proud moment for the Old North State Club tennis program.
Have a safe and happy September and I look forward to seeing you soon enjoying
your club.
August
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the newest member of our
management team. Rhonda Shipton joined our staff recently as the
Assistant Clubhouse Manager. Rhonda’s main focus will be managing the service
aspect of the food and beverage operation and we expect that she will be taking
over the banquet booking responsibilities in the near future.
Rhonda brings a diverse amount of work experience to the club and she possesses
considerable knowledge of all aspects of the food and beverage department. Most
recently, she was employed as the General Manager for the Front Street Brewery
in Wilmington, NC. Rhonda and her family are from Albemarle,
so she is excited about being closer to home. I hope you will join me in
welcoming her to ONSC and I look forward to her future contributions to the
club.
On a separate note, after a recent incident at the club I was asked about the
status of defibrillators (AED) on the property. The club currently owns three
defibrillators, which are located at the clubhouse, marina, and security office.
Along with all the security staff, there are twelve staff members from various
departments that have been trained to use them and are certified to perform CPR.
Even though these devices are available, in the event we encounter a medical
emergency our first response will be to call 911 and solicit assistance from
trained professionals. Although I am glad that we have them, I hope they are
never needed. We’ll be happy to find alternate ways to “shock” you.
Have a safe and happy August and I look forward to seeing you soon enjoying your
club.
July
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate John Chatlak, Tennis
Director for his recent victory at the Southern Cup Seniors Tournament in
Columbus, Georgia. John participated in the singles competition and went
undefeated in his age division while battling the extreme heat. John has
competed in other events since joining our staff over a year ago and he
continues to represent ONSC very well on the pro circuit.
In the event you are considering learning to play tennis; or you haven’t picked
up a racket in a while; or just looking for a different activity to get some
exercise, I invite you to call John at the Tennis Shop. He would be happy to
assist you with finding the right group to play with or can recommend the type
of clinic or instruction program you need to get on your way to enjoying tennis.
If you just feel like hitting balls, maybe the ball machine is the right thing
for you. If you don’t enjoy the heat during the day, the courts are equipped
with great lighting for night play. The club is fortunate to have such a
beautiful and well-maintained tennis facility with first-rate instruction, so I
hope you will consider making plans to visit soon.
After assessing the first month with Carolina Pool Management operating
the pool, it is our believe that overall, the operation and maintenance of the
pools has improved. Although we experienced some minor issues with the
transition, I hope you have found the facility to be more organized, safer, and
monitored better. Carolina Pool Management services fifty-five pools in the area
and I have been told that they have been consistently pleased with our
operation. Furthermore, we ask that you continue to sign-in each time you
utilize the facility as it provides us with important usage information as well
as the impact of guests.
Have a safe and happy July and I look forward to seeing you soon enjoying your
club.
May
May has arrived and summer appears to be just around the corner. We are
certainly busy preparing for the increased activity that accompanies this time
of year as well as the pool opening scheduled for May 24th.
We have decided to take a different approach with the pool operation this year
as we have elected to subcontract this service out to a pool management company.
This course of action was made as an attempt to gain professional expertise for
our pools and equipment as well as improve the overall operation of the
facility.
The pool will continue to operate Monday through Sunday with the specific hours
posted inside the newsletter. Furthermore, due to feedback we received from
members and the committees, we will begin asking members to sign in at the pool
upon arrival. This will not only assist us in verifying that the pool is being
used by members and authorized guests, but it will also help us determine the
usage patterns necessary to operate the pool more effectively.
In regards to the Marina, please note that the storage areas are intended for
boats and boating related accessories. This issue was addressed with the Marina
committee and it was decided that items such as golf carts, all terrain
vehicles, large appliances, etc. are not permitted to be stored at the marina.
We appreciate your cooperation, so that we may keep the storage areas as
aesthetically pleasing as possible.
As the activity at the club has increased, we have also noticed more violations
of the dress code for the golf course and the hat and cell phone policies for
the clubhouse, which were implemented earlier this year. For your convenience,
we have included them inside this newsletter and ask that you and your guests
become familiar with these new guidelines.
Lastly, please make a note of the membership meeting that is scheduled for
Sunday, May 18th at 3:00 pm. Members of the Advisory Board and Bill Mistr,
Dominion Representative will be in attendance to discuss membership issues and
provide an overview of operations. The main emphasis of the meeting will be to
address the long-range future of the club.
Have a great May and I look forward to seeing you soon enjoying your club.
